How to Prepare Your Home for a Flooring Install Quote

A little prep before a flooring estimate makes the quote more accurate and avoids surprise change orders later.

Before the visit

• List the rooms you want done, including closets, halls, and stairs.
• Gather a rough square footage if you have it (house plans or listing info help).
• Save photos of styles and colors you like.
• Know what is under the current floor if you can find out (slab, crawl space, upper level).

During the visit

• Clear a path so each room can be measured wall to wall.
• Point out squeaks, soft spots, past leaks, or uneven areas.
• Ask about transitions to tile or carpet and how door heights will be handled.

Questions to ask

• Is removal and disposal of the old floor included?
• Who moves furniture and appliances?
• Are baseboards or quarter round removed, reused, or replaced?
• What is the waste factor in the material count?
• How long will rooms be out of use?

Before install day

Plan where furniture will go, remove fragile items, and arrange pets and kids. Some materials need to sit in the home to acclimate before install, so ask how many days ahead they will be delivered.
